Welcome to Fantasy and Fellowship!
Where you get all fantasy, no filler.
Hey there!
Welcome to Fantasy and Fellowship, where you get weekly micro-fantasies, filled with deep and expansive lore, that deliver a 1,000-page “adventure high” in under 60 seconds—no novel-length commitment required.
And if that sounds like an awful lot to promise, think about it this way…
Modern fantasy readers have it rough. Novels are getting longer, days are getting busier, and plots are growing more complex. Reading fantasy shouldn’t feel like a chore, and yet for some readers, it does. In a world where our attention is pulled in a thousand directions, most fantasy fans are forced to choose between “nothing” or a 40-hour audiobook. I’m here to give you a third option: All fantasy, no filler.
Fantasy stories don’t have to be thousands of pages long to be epic at heart, and they don’t have to take months to deliver on their promise.
If you crave all the depth, magic, and wonder of fantasy, you can have it all without trudging through hundreds of pages of exposition to get it. If you’re asking yourself, “How can I stay connected to the magic of fantasy without sacrificing my entire weekend? How can I spark my own creative engine? How does the business of these stories actually work?”
Then you’re in the right place.
🐉 Who is Fantasy and Fellowship For?
Fantasy and Fellowship is a newsletter specifically for:
⚔️Time-Strapped Fantasy Fans: You grew up on classics such as The Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time, and Shannara, but life got busy. You miss the thrill of discovering new worlds, living legends, and cool magic systems, but you don’t have 60 hours to spare to make it through the first major story beat. I’ll give you that same hit of wonder in under a minute with complete, compact micro-fantasy stories.
✍️Fiction Writers & World Builders: If you’re a writer who needs new ideas for a novel, your next short story, or an upcoming D&D campaign, consider this your weekly dose of inspiration. Every micro-fantasy is a masterclass in condensed world-building and atmospheric storytelling, complete with prompts and reflection questions to get you thinking about your own craft.
📈Aspiring Fiction Entrepreneurs: You love fantasy stories, but you’re also curious about the “how.” For those who want to learn more about the business side of fiction—how to build an audience, how to monetize a niche, and how the modern fiction economy works—I’ll pull back the curtains and show you what I’m doing to make money from my storytelling.
⁉️ The Biggest Problems for Today’s Fantasy Readers
Chances are that you’ve stumbled across this newsletter because you’re facing one of these 10 common hurdles in the fantasy genre:
Problem #1: The “To-Be-Read” - Having a stack of epic fantasy novels on your nightstand that you’ll never have the time or energy to actually start.
Problem #2: Time Poverty - Loving the “high” of a good fantasy novel but only having a 5-minute coffee break or half an hour before bed to enjoy it.
Problem #3: World-Building Bloat - Suffering through hundreds of pages of exposition and traveling just to get to the good stuff.
Problem #4: Narrative Fatigue - Wanting the emotional payoff of a story climax without the exhaustive setup of a massive, multi-book series.
Problem #5: The “Boring” Middle - Getting stuck in the 400-page slump common in epic fantasy novels.
Problem #6: Creative Stagnation - Feeling like every fantasy trope has been overcooked and overdone; all mainstream hits look and feel the same.
Problem #7: Isolation - Loving the fantasy genre but having no time to engage with a community of like-minded readers.
Problem #8: Lack of Variety - Sticking to one author for six months (or longer) because their series is just that long.
Problem #9: Context Overload - Forgetting who “Lord What’s-His-Name-Again?” is by the time you pick the book back up three weeks later.
Problem #10: The “Black Box” of Publishing - Loving fiction but having no clue how the business works behind the scenes, especially for self-publishing indie authors.
👑 Fantasy and Fellowship: Weekly Short-Form Fantasy Fiction for Today’s Busy Readers (and Writers)
Here’s what you can expect from Fantasy and Fellowship:
Micro-Fantasies & Other Short-Form Fiction
I’m constantly using what I call “micro-fantasy” to practice my writing skills in public. Every week, you’ll receive a free micro-fantasy story (between 100 and 300 words long) straight to your inbox. My stories tend to include:
Character-driven conflict
Short, punchy, self-contained plots
Beautiful and often-haunting imagery
And more!
And as a paid member of Fantasy and Fellowship, you’ll gain access to the entire backlog of stories, including longer flash-fiction fantasies and serialized fiction. Come for the micros, stay for the long-form.
Writing Prompts
In addition to my original fiction, I also show you how you can write your own short stories with writing prompts. Every week, you’ll receive:
A one-word prompt to inspire your next story
A description of that word to give you some ideas
A place to share that story so you can get it in front of readers
With these prompts, you’ll have more ideas than you’ll know what to do with, and that should help you build your fiction writing skills over time.
Business Recaps
I try to treat my fiction writing as a business—and businesses need to make money. Every month, my paid subscribers receive a financial recap of how my writing business is operating. This includes:
Profits from royalties on Amazon KDP
Sales from my personal online storefront
Ad spending (and how I’m promoting my work)
Strategies to drive monthly and annual recurring revenue
And more!
My goal with these financial recaps is to provide both transparency and guidance for writers who are just starting out or those who are just a couple of steps behind me. By sharing knowledge, we can all work together to see more success with our writing.
👋 Who Am I?
Let me introduce myself! I’m Josh Louis, the founder of Fantasy and Fellowship and its parent company, J. Louis Creative LLC.
I am a fantasy fiction writer, higher education professional, and solopreneur with over a decade of experience in both B2B writing and writing support. I spent years trying to follow the accepted “best practices” of writing and publishing, only to burn myself out in the process. It wasn’t until I discovered the concept of micro-fiction that I realized my commitment to long-form fiction was actually killing my dreams of a writing career, and that it is, in fact, okay to not write a fantasy novel. Since then, I’ve been giving traditional publishing the middle finger and self-publishing my work on Substack, Amazon KDP, and my personal online storefront.
In 2025, I finally published my first book, The Microfiction Method, a fiction/non-fiction hybrid that explores the art of the 100-word story and different strategies for maintaining consistent creative output. I’m now expanding my business to include 1:1 CliftonStrengths coaching for fiction writers who want to 10x their own output. My mission is to ensure no writer ever feels like they have to change who they are just to produce what they love.
I don’t just “write about writing” like loads of other Substackers. I’m a fiction writer first and foremost, and I pour my heart and soul into every story I publish.
Beyond Fantasy and Fellowship, you can find my work here:
Strengths-Driven Storytelling, a newsletter where I share weekly CliftonStrengths writing workflows to help you publish your best work in half the time—without the burnout of “standard” advice.
