Welcome to Fantasy and Fellowship!

Welcome, weary traveler, to Fantasy and Fellowship, written by Josh Louis (me).

Fantasy and Fellowship is a newsletter for fantasy readers who crave adventure. I share microfiction, short stories, serials, and other types of long-form fantasy. If you’re a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, Brandon Sanderson, and Terry Brooks, you’re in for a treat.

My ultimate goal with Fantasy and Fellowship is simple: to create a community where fantasy readers and writers can band together and crush the forces of darkness, both internally and externally, that hold us back from telling our stories.

Josh’s Origin Story ⚔️

I’ve been writing for over a decade now, but my journey has been a bit of a rollercoaster with massive highs and deep, dark lows.

For years, I thought the secret sauce for a career in fiction was to write a bestselling novel that gets picked up by a big publishing house. I took what seemed like all the right steps. I went to creative writing school, worked on my craft, and tried my best to stay consistent, even after entering the professional workforce (which, it turns out, is really hard).

But life is messy, and somewhere in the hustle and bustle of my post-college career as a copywriter, I lost sense of what I truly loved: telling stories.

Eventually, I completed my Master’s degree in English and Creative Writing, then graduated from copywriting work to academic writing support at my local community college. That’s where I discovered my second passion: helping other writers. While exciting in its own way, it wasn’t long before my career became a distraction from what I really wanted to do with my life.

I discovered Substack and the freedom of writing online in 2024, and since then, it has grown into an immense source of joy in my life.

Now, I share my stories online without the constraints and gatekeeping of the traditional publishing industry while encouraging and supporting other writers to do the same. The principle that guides my work: you don’t need anyone’s permission to share your writing. You certainly don’t need an agent or a book deal; you just need the courage to put your work out there.

Fantasy and Fellowship embodies that courage; it’s where I’m building my fantasy fiction empire in public. I hope my journey can inspire other writers to do the same.

Thanks so much for stopping by and checking out Fantasy and Fellowship! I hope you’ll consider joining the community as a subscriber. I’ll do my best to make sure you get value out of it.
